While renovating their own office, Base Architecture asked; “Can we fill a gap in the local community by activating the left-over under croft below our office?”

The first step of construction was the biggest challenge, digging out a low crawl space to allow it to have access to natural light and be a comfortable gathering space. Being partially buried, the concealed spaces offer a secret destination for locals, but once inside it is bathed in morning light with glimpses through the vegetation to the neighbourhood life outside.  The location heavily influenced the spaces, with a restrained and simple material palette reflecting a refined, honest design, appropriate to the subterranean location.
