Our Hawthorne House project involves the addition of a compact “pod” to the rear of a workers cottage.  The philosophy behind this one is for the pod to turn its back on the neighbour to the north and open up to the backyards to the south and east (both the neighbours’ and its own!), while still allowing for plenty of northern light and ventilation.  The design plays up the distinction between old and new – the cottage at the front is unapologetically a workers cottage, and the pod to the rear is unapologetically a modern addition.
