In this case a growing family had outgrown their original Queenslander home and were looking to bring something new to the existing house while also increasing liveability of the home. Although the owners had originally planned to raise the house and build under early in the design process it became clear that a new 2-storey wing to the rear of the existing house was better suited to the functional and budgetary requirements of the project.
The existing kitchen, bathroom, formal dining and living rooms were converted to a new open plan configuration, while retaining and restoring the original pressed metal ceilings. New living and dining areas open directly on the deck and back yard, bringing the outside in and creating a greater sense of space within the house. The stairwell accessing the upper level parents’ retreat is detailed with timber screening and is sheeted with translucent polycarbonate sheeting, protecting the occupants’ privacy and ensuring natural lighting within.
